Город на юге штата Огайо, в 75 км к югу от г. Колумбус [Columbus], на р. Сайото [Scioto River]. 21,7 тыс. жителей (2000). Административный центр [county seat] округа Росс [Ross County]. Промышленный и торговый центр сельскохозяйственного района. Традиционный центр целлюлозно-бумажного производства. Основан в 1796, статус города с 1802; на языке шауни [Shawnee] название означает "главный город". В 1800 - административный центр Северо-Западной Территории [Northwest Territory], в 1803-10 и в 1812-16 - административный центр (столица) штата Огайо. Отделение Огайского университета [Ohio University, Chillicothe Branch] (1946) Среди достопримечательностей района - национальный памятник "Город курганов" [Mound City Group National Monument].
